I never knew I hated this many people

"What's in a name," Juliet asked in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. "That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet." But as it turns out, Juliet was wrong. Not quite as wrong as she was during the whole double suicide thing...but wrong nonetheless.

You see, the more I think about the possible name for our due-in-January baby the more I realise that there's a lot more to a name than Juliet might think. I'm not just talking about the importance of a name to an individual's identity, but rather it's made me realise just how many people I hate really don't like.

I've realised that there are some names that I just wouldn't give to my child because of the people I know with those same names [and, no, I'm not going to give any of the names because of *insert reasons here*] . This is kind of how the conversations go in my head:

"What about so-and-so?"
"Nope. I remember when he took his pants off and mooned a security guard. I don't want my kid to be a security guard mooner."
"Okay, then what about this-and-that?"
"NOOOOOO WAY! She once did the horrible thing, and I'm not taking any chances."

And then there's the pure awkwardness of not thinking through the name before you give it. I knew a guy whose name was Shaun Hit. Doesn't sound too bad, does it? But when you put his initial and surname down... S.Hit. Yeah. That. You also get people named Wayne King. That's always fun. My niece, Hannah, likes to talk about L-sha, except the dash isn't silent.

So what's in a name? Quite a lot, apparently.
