Dear Alice,
The day you were born was the most wonderful day I can ever imagine. When you screamed your first scream...I can't even explain how great that felt. But there was more to that hospital delivery room than you might imagine.
Everyone who helped deliver you was a woman. The gynae, Dr Rajah, a woman. The anesthetist, woman. Both Dr Rajah's assistants, women. The nurses who prepped your mommy, all women. In fact, the only people in that room who weren't women was your pediatrician (he was only there for about a minute, plus he was the person available at short notice because you were delivered via emergency C-Section) and your dad.
Alicat, that delivery room shows that you can be whatever you want to be. There are no limits. Doctor. Nurse. Anesthetist. You could be a mommy, if you want to. Like your mommy, you could go into marketing, branding and eventing. Like your two grannies, you could be in office admin. Like your auntie, you could be a teacher. Or you could be anything else you want to be. (Just don't be like your dad...no journalism for you!)
Baby, being a woman in this world is hard. Bad things happen to women. But don't let those things stop you. You can achieve what you want to achieve - and that delivery room proves it.
I'm writing this on Woman's Day, which recognises great women in your country's history who rose up against repressive and racist laws; they took a stand for what was right even though they would suffer as a result. Be what ever you want to be, but all that I'll ever ask of you is that you, like them, stand up against what is wrong.
Happy Women's Day, baby girl. And may this day inspire you always.
I love you,
Daddy
