Of mermaids and birthdays [GALLERY]

Her scales shimmer in the sunlight, the gold sending reflected beams of light onto the water of the pool. The mermaid is the centre of attention. And she should be; it’s her birthday.

She laughs - chortles, even - as she shoves a dodgy piece of plastic of unknown origins into her mouth. Her face and butt are covered in the sand she had moments earlier tried to eat. This while she stands in ankle-deep water.

Surrounding her were her friends, family and her parents’ nearest and dearest. The fuss was minimal, with the focus on her being able to play, run amok and have as much fun as her one-year-old heart could muster. And have fun she did. For us, it was the perfect birthday party.

While I can understand why some parents would want to throw a big bash for their kid’s first party, it’s really not mine and Megan’s vibes. The truth of the matter is that Alice had no idea it was her birthday, had very little interest in opening her presents and, honestly, wasn’t entirely sure what was happening. She was playing with her friends - and she loved it - and that was enough for her. And that was enough for us.

When she’s older and understands the concept of birthdays and gift-giving and gift-receiving [which is more important than receiving, I feel] then we will throw her any party she wants. But until then, we’re keeping things in check, much like we are for Christmas.

Here are some of the pics from the day. Enjoy!
