Oh, School Holiday, how I'll miss you [GALLERY]

Alice went back to school today, ending her first summer holiday. It was really great to spend time with her -- and I’m going to miss her (even though I’m secretly delighted because she’s a super-energetic one-year-old!). So here’s a little ode I wrote to that friend of my youth, School Holiday:

Oh, School Holiday, I remember you fondly. You and I used to spend time bouncing between play and sleep, friends and sleep, computer games and sleep. There was a lot of sleeping. I miss sleeping. But we haven’t shared much time together, have we? I grew up, got a job, and we drifted apart. We had our moments, but the relationship ground slowly.to.a.halt.

Until this year!

Because this year, we had Alice. She goes to school -- well, creche -- and that means she gets to have that relationship with you, School Holiday! And, thankfully, it meant that my wife and I got to rekindle that relationship with you, too.

Oh, School Holiday, how great it was to rekindle that relationship.

We got to play on the beach, swim in the pool, take jobs on the promenade. We got to take naps again! To read. To take the dogs for a walk, even. It was tiring, yes, with an energetic one-year-old running and climbing and escaping and conducting general tomfoolery. But it was wonderful.

If having a child gives the chance to spend time with you, School Holiday, then that’s reason enough to have a child.

Oh, School Holiday, how I’ll miss you.
