Transformer: Age of Baby [Alt title: “Big” things are happening]

It’s been a big month for House Savides. Literally. In a matter of days, our little Alice has become a Big Girl. I’m not sure how it happened, but it’s happened.

It all started at school [which is, incidentally, one of her favourite places in the world] in mid-February. She was moved out of her cot and onto a mattress on the floor for nap-time. She’s left the confines of her cot. Babies go in cots; Big Girls don’t. She also started eating on her own. It’s messy, but it’s what Big Girls do. Babies don’t eat on their own with their own utensils.

It’s been a week of “big girl things in the Savides household.

But it got worse.

She’s also moved out of her first car seat. Yep, she’s now in a forward-facing seat. Big Girls go in those sorts of car seats; babies don’t.

And then it worsened.

At the same time she got her car seat, she also got a new sippy-cup – one that doesn’t have handles. Babies use sippy-cups with handles; Big Girls don’t.

And it worsened further.

Alice is no longer the in the crèche at school. She’s left the babies behind and, along with two other kids, has moved up to the next class. Babies don’t move out of crèche; Big Girls do.

A farewell letter from the babies in her créche that she has now left behind.
Thus, the transformation was complete.

Part of me wanted to send her back to the crib, to stop her growing up, to hit the pause button. I wanted her to go back on her bottle, back to her first day at crèche, back to having to be fed pureed everything. But you can’t, can you. Time progression is a bitch. But you also don’t want to. It’s a good thing that she’s becoming a Big Girl because she’s starting to become her own person. She’s learning independence, learning what she likes and doesn’t, learning who she likes and doesn’t. She’s growing up.

It’s hard, but it’s a new chapter – and a new adventure for all of us. Onwards and upwards.
