Alice looked up at the roof of the enclosure, and her jaw
dropped in what was pure shock. Her mouth agape, but not a sound coming from
it. Her mind was blown because, hanging on by its claws on the wire mesh, was
something she’d only seen in her favourite book: a squirrel [or as she says it,
a “wi-wurl”].
That’s how our family day out at Flag Animal Farm on the
KwaZulu-Natal north coast began. And it only got better for her.
Birds [her absolute favourite], chickens, w horse-unicorn
[my absolute worst], cows, bunnies, ducks, pigs and goats — she tried to touch
them all. Except, maybe, the horse. She was a little scared of it, probably
because of how big it is.
For four hours we took her around the farm, which largely
houses animals that have been rescued after being abandoned, neglected and
mistreated. Where once they suffered, if Alice is a benchmark, they now get
nothing but love.
At R40 a person, if you’re looking for a place to take
your kid/s to, this is an absolute winner.
